Wedding Terms to Know: Floral Details

Meeting with your wedding florist soon? From flowers for your wedding party to arrangements for your reception, here are a few terms that are helpful to know before you jump into all things floral!

Bouquet
A bouquet is an arrangement of flowers traditionally carried by the bride as she walks down the aisle. Bridesmaids also carry bouquets – usually smaller in size than the bride’s bouquet, but similar in style. Bridal bouquets vary in size, from small and delicate to oversized statement pieces, and come in a variety of shapes. Remember – you’ll have to carry it, so make sure it’s a size that’s easy for you to manage on your wedding day.

Boutonniere
This is a single flower or small arrangement that is traditionally worn on the left lapel of a suit jacket. Just like bouquets, the groom’s boutonniere is usually slightly larger than the rest of the party’s boutonnieres. There’s a right and wrong way to pin a boutonniere, so be sure to ask your florist for a quick lesson!

Corsage
A corsage is a small arrangement of flowers worn around the wrist or pinned to the left shoulder area. Corsages are traditionally donned by mothers, grandmothers, aunts, etc., signifying them as a close or important family member.

Pomander
As it relates to weddings, a pomander is a decorative ball of flowers used in wedding decor and sometimes carried down the aisle by flower girls or junior attendants instead of a basket of petals or a bouquet.

Floral Arrangement
This term applies to any arrangement of flowers, whether it’s a centerpiece for your reception tables or accents for your wedding ceremony arch. Floral arrangements can vary in shape and size.

Garland
Garlands are bands or chains of flowers, leaves, or other types of foliage. Most commonly, they’re used as table runners on long reception tables or along the front of a sweetheart table, and are usually accompanied by candles for a lush, romantic look.

Flower Wall
This can be a stationary wall full of florals or a suspended “wall” of hanging florals that serve as a backdrop for ceremonies, sweetheart tables, photobooths, and more.
